The Lead QA Automation Engineer is a critical technical leader within Vida’s Engineering Enablement Team. This role focuses on building the frameworks, environments, processes and tools that empower product teams to deliver reliable, high-quality software at scale. This person will architect automation frameworks, define quality processes, enable consistent release practices, mentor QA engineers and partner with engineering, DevOps and product teams to ensure our platform ships with confidence.
Responsibilities:
- Define requirements for and collaborate with DevOps/SRE to build and maintain a fully production-like staging environment that enables end-to-end, integration, regression and performance testing.
- Ensure staging includes all required systems including core APIs, backend services, microservices, cron jobs, queues, authentication and mobile/web builds and remains stable, predictable and reflective of production.
- Implement and maintain synthetic and/or de-identified data models across core member/provider/employer scenarios.
- Own automation around data seeding, refresh and reset workflows.
- Integrate automated test suites into staging deployments and ensure staging functions as the primary quality gate before releases.
- Architect, develop and optimize scalable, maintainable automation frameworks across web, mobile and API platforms.
- Define standards for test structure, code quality, reliability and maintainability within QA automation systems.
- Enable product engineers and QA contributors to build tests on these frameworks through clear patterns, documentation and reusable components.
- Ensure automation is deeply aligned with staging as the definitive test environment.
- Build core automated tests for foundational flows and critical infrastructure.
- Develop reusable test utilities, data factories and shared tooling.
- Partner with product teams to expand test coverage and integrate automation into their workflows.
- Diagnose failures, triage issues in frameworks or environments and reduce flakiness.
- Define Vida’s quality strategy with an emphasis on shift-left practices, early defect detection and automated quality gates.
- Own and evolve the release quality process, including quality gates, staging validation workflows and release-readiness criteria—while enabling product teams to execute the process independently.
- Track and improve key quality metrics (automation coverage, defect leakage, cycle time, reliability).
- Serve as a key stakeholder in release readiness reviews.
- Mentor QA engineers and product engineers in writing reliable automated tests, designing scenarios and contributing to shared frameworks.
- Conduct code reviews and drive best practices that promote quality ownership across engineering.
- Collaborate on prioritization and capacity planning for quality initiatives and automation roadmap.
- Partner with engineering leads, product managers, DevOps/SRE and clinical operations to ensure core user journeys and clinical workflows are validated in staging.
- Collaborate with product teams to integrate automation into feature development and define quality gates.
- Support UAT and customer-facing demo environments by ensuring staging reliability and test data availability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree at a minimum.
- 5-8+ years of QA engineering experience with 2+ years in senior/lead automation roles.
- Strong proficiency in automation tools and languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python or Java.
- Experience with web, mobile and API testing frameworks (Playwright, Cypress, Appium, Detox, etc.).
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, Jenkins).
- Experience creating and maintaining non-prod environments used for automation or integration testing.
- Solid knowledge of QA methodologies, test design, debugging best practices and automation principles.
Preferred:
- Experience operating in healthcare, regulated environments (HIPAA) or high-stakes compliance-driven industries.
- Experience building or managing staging/pre-production environments.
- Familiarity with AWS/GCP infrastructure, containers, microservices and Terraform or equivalent IaC.
- Experience with performance testing (k6, JMeter) and observability tools (Datadog, Sentry, Grafana).
- Experience with complex, multi-tenant data seeding strategies or synthetic data generation.
$160,000 - $175,000 a year
