The Task at Hand:
The Packaging Engineer reports directly to the Director of Operations and Engineering and is responsible for developing and managing packaging solutions from concept through commercialization. This role ensures design alignment with brand standards, sustainability goals, and regulatory requirements while maintaining manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and product integrity. The Packaging Engineer partners cross-functionally and with external suppliers to design, test, validate, and optimize packaging; owns specifications and documentation within company systems; and drives continuous improvement and innovation across the portfolio.
In This Role, You Will:
• Partner cross-functionally from concept to launch, translating brand vision into manufacturable, consumer-ready packaging
• Design and optimize packaging for efficiency in manufacturing and co-packing (line compatibility, automation readiness, waste reduction)
• Ensure packaging preserves product quality while achieving sustainability goals (recyclability, source reduction, lifecycle analysis, certifications, regulatory reporting)
• Establish and enforce packaging quality standards, ensuring compliance with internal, regulatory, and customer requirements
• Conduct and validate packaging tests (lab, transit/drop, line trials) to ensure robust supply chain performance
• Manage and qualify suppliers and converters with Procurement, including trials and capability assessments
• Troubleshoot packaging and material issues with suppliers, operations, and co-manufacturers
• Lead optimization initiatives such as spec updates, material transitions, and cost-reduction projects
• Maintain accurate packaging specifications and technical documentation in asset management systems
• Stay informed on industry trends, materials, and technologies to guide packaging innovation
• Support compliance and reporting related to packaging regulations, sustainability requirements, and customer standards
In This Role, You’ll Bring With You:
• Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field required
• 5-7 years of packaging engineering experience in food or beverage creation, reviewing, evaluating, and maintaining packaging required
• Club packaging experience, ideally with Costco or a similar customer
• Experience with specification and technical document (die lines, pallet patterns) creation and management required
• Recent professional experience working with organic products or baby food preferred
• Prior professional experience in sustainable packaging initiatives, highly valued
• Proficiency with High-Pressure Processing (HPP) and a strong understanding of packaging materials, testing methods, and standards (FDA, ASTM, ISTA) related to HPP require
• Able to organize and execute packaging projects, including laboratory and plant-based evaluations
• Strong teamwork and communication skills for effective cross-functional collaboration
• Solid knowledge of Microsoft Suite, Outlook, Slack, and other professional platforms
• Up to 25% travel required: Although this role is a remote work-from-home position, we “Farmers” do meet as a company and/or department at least once a year. You should also anticipate possible travel to farms in the supply chain and occasional conferences
• A genuine passion for improving childhood nutrition for a healthier and happier planet

• Must reside in the United States to be considered for this position

Compensation:
• Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt
• The anticipated salary range for this position is $100,000.00 - $135,000.00. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a few factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonuses, stipends, equity, and role-specific perks.
