Position Description
The Elementary Athletics Instructor (Athletics Coach) is a full-time, hourly position designed for educators who are passionate about physical education, sports, and child development. The Athletics Coach leads engaging, inclusive PE classes that help students build strength, teamwork, and confidence while reinforcing Rocketship’s core values. This role works with students across multiple grade levels throughout the day and collaborates closely with classroom teachers and school leaders to promote physical health and social-emotional growth.
This position reports to an Assistant Principal (or Business Operations Manager, depending on school site).
Essential Functions:
- The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Motivate students to actively participate in physical activities and lessons; create a positive, engaging classroom environment; and maintain high behavioral expectations for all students.
- Follow network guidelines for curriculum implementation (including scope and sequence maps, unit plans, and lesson plans), adapting as needed to meet the developmental needs of each grade level.
- Differentiate instruction by age and grade to ensure activities are developmentally appropriate and accessible to all students.
- Collaborate with school staff to promote a positive school culture grounded in Rocketship’s core values: respect, responsibility, persistence, and empathy.
- Serve as the lead instructor for large group lessons focused on physical education, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Communicate and collaborate with fellow Enrichment Center Coordinators (ECCs), teachers, and school leaders; actively participate in professional development as a member of the Rocketship team.
- Maintain a positive and productive learning environment by enforcing campus safety rules and behavioral expectations; respond appropriately to occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or situations requiring additional student support.
- Inventory, organize, and maintain Enrichment Center equipment and materials to ensure a safe and well-stocked learning environment.
- Support arrival, dismissal, lunch, and/or recess duties as needed to ensure smooth school operations and student safety.
Required Qualifications:
- Passion for working with children and the ability to motivate, support, and inspire them to reach high levels of success.
- At least 2 years of college coursework required, or a high school diploma and ability to pass a Paraprofessional assessment during onboarding (prior to start).
- Experience or training working with youth in an educational, recreational, or coaching capacity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with a wide range of staff members and students.
- Fluency in English required; bilingual proficiency in Spanish or other languages is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications/Ideal Candidate:
- Experience managing or teaching groups of 25 or more elementary-aged students.
- Content expertise in physical education, athletics, or a related field.
- Belief in the value of enrichment education and its role in supporting the whole child.
- Ability to learn and follow laws, rules, and procedures related to public education and specific to Rocketship Public Schools.
$20.50 - $24.50 an hour
