Test Fluoride and Silica optical fibers, fluoride patch cables, and fluoride fiber preforms manufactured by Thorlabs to ensure they meet all performance specifications. Spool and barcode optical fibers in preparation for characterization and for putting them to stock. Assist in various fiber characterization tasks in support of R&D projects. Perform flat cleaves and other end face preparation techniques to assist the fiber assembly group when needed. Work closely with the QC Supervisor to evaluate the performance of non-standard optical fibers. Works under the direction of the QC Supervisor. Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to: • Characterize optical fiber produced by Thorlabs. • Characterize fiber preforms produced by Thorlabs. • Characterize fluoride patch cables produced by Thorlabs. • Perform maintenance on equipment in the fiber test lab. • Setup equipment for testing and maintain logs of tests performed. • Performs related duties as required. • Perform other BU essential functions and participate assigned cross training. In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for: • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures. • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments. The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position. Physical Activities: Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools. Requirements Experience: • Minimum of 4 years of manufacturing experience or related technical education. Education: • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience. Specialized Knowledge and Skills: • Strong analytical skills in production management. • Ability to read and evaluate blueprints, schematics and production instructions • Experience with fiber optic manufacturing and photonics lab processes. • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with other production departments • Ability to research, collect and interpret technical data • Proficiency in basic computer use (Word, Excel) and communication tools • Good verbal and written communication skills • Possess basic mechanical aptitude. • Use and safety of small hand tool is a must. • Attention to detail • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards. • Discipline to perform tests repeatably, as described in the test procedures, and make impartial pass/fail decisions on the evaluated product. • Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
